Obituary for David L. Hughes

David L. Hughes, 86, of Bradford, MA, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at High Pointe House Hospice in Haverhill with his wife and daughters by his side.

Born in Jenkins, Kentucky, January 17, 1932, he was the son of the late Arlie and Nellie (Cushey) Hughes. He graduated from Jenkins High School and later moved to Salisbury, Maryland where he lived for 10 years before moving to Bradford, Massachusetts for the past 53 years.

He was employed by the Boston Globe as a pressman for over 25 years and had previously worked at the Salisbury Times, Salem News, and Boston Herald American. He was a member of West Church.

Upon retiring, Dave enjoyed traveling and cruising with his wife, Ida, and family. They also became snowbirds in Port Charlotte, Florida, where he participated in the many activities at the clubhouse with his special community of friends. He loved football and basketball and enjoyed bowling, fishing, card games, bocce, fireworks, and the beach. He also had a soft spot for animals, especially his dog Ellie.

David’s family was his greatest joy. He treasured his time with them and had many “adopted” family members. He had a kind heart, great sense of humor, unending stories, and a friendly, warm smile that invited everyone to be his friend. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

His family members include his devoted wife of 60 years, Ida M. Hughes of Bradford; daughters Arleen Dickinson; Paula Lawton and husband Brian; Pamela Hughes and Dustin Mendelsohn, all of Bradford, grandchildren Shawna Marion, Brian Lawton, Kim Dempsey, Jeffrey Dickinson, Scott Dickinson, and Amy Dickinson; great-grandchildren David, Emma, Eve, and Ava Marion and Chase, Ari Michelle, and Rylee Dempsey, sister Naomi Lewis, several nieces and nephews, extended family members, and many caring friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Debra Hughes, and brother, Chandler Hughes.

His family expresses their gratitude to the caring staff at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida, and High Point House Hospice in Haverhill for their kindness and compassion.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his celebration of life at West Congregational Church, 767 Broadway, Haverhill, MA on Saturday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are by the H.L.
