Obituary for Lawrence R. Panaro, Sr.

Lawrence R. Panaro Sr., 92, of Haverhill, passed away Tuesday, January 22, at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Haverhill on January 5, 1927, the youngest son of ten children of the late Lorenzo and Grace Panaro.

Larry was educated in the Haverhill school system and graduated from Haverhill High School Class of 1945. He was a three-sport athlete and a captain of the ‘44 and ‘45 state finalist basketball team. After graduating, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged receiving the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal.

Upon his discharge from the Navy, Larry married his high school sweetheart the late Dorothy E. (Roberts) Panaro. His family and his marriage were the most important things in his life. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 67 years and together raised four children. He loved coaching his children in sports and especially enjoyed attending all his grandchildren’s games. He was extremely knowledgeable about sports and he stayed humbly in the background at their games and provided private advice and guidance to each of his grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his children, Lawrence R. Panaro Jr. and his wife Nancy of Haverhill, Gary R. Panaro and his wife Gail of Bradford, Mark J. Panaro and his wife Karen of Atkinson and Linda Paquette and her husband Phillip of Charleston, SC, 11 grandchildren: Kaitlyn Wharf and Andrew Panaro, Cristina Alex and Matthew Paquette, Lauren Egan, Douglas and Christopher Panaro, Ryan, Kevin, Jonathan and Cameron Panaro, six great grandchildren: Samantha, Hunter, Emily, Jack, Parker and Shea as well several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers John, Joseph & Frank Panaro, and sisters Grace Somma, Mary Papparlardo, Katherine (Kitty) Romatelli, Rose Kodis, Agnes Eafalla, and Pauline Blasi.

Prior to his retirement in 1991, Larry was employed as a salesman at Nissen Bread Company.
He had many interests including being a member of the Garibaldi Club for over 70 years where he served as president in the past. He was an exceptional card player and he enjoyed playing with his family and friends. Larry was also an avid golfer and Boston sports fan.

The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and support he received from the staff at the Hannah Duston Healthcare Center.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the calling hours on Friday, Jan. 25th from 4-7 PM at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. His Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 in Sacred Hearts Church, 165 South Main St. Bradford. Please meet at the church.
