Obituary for Josephine "Josie" (Rosario) McIntosh

Josephine “Josie” McIntosh (née Rosario) 96, died peacefully in her sleep at Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Methuen, Massachusetts on February 7, 2019 after sustaining a fall five days before her death.

Josephine was born in New York City on October 3, 1922 to Josephine Rosario (née Benitez) and German Rosario. Josephine was the oldest of their two daughters.

Josephine waited nine years for a sister that she begged for and considered herself her sister’s second mother. Spanish was Josephine’s native language and throughout her childhood Josephine was very timid and didn’t speak much, but she became bi-lingual, and in her later years she eventually found her voice.

Josephine married Ira McIntosh on September 29, 1951. Their marriage produced two daughters, Lydia and Sylvia. They were devoted to each other until Ira’s death in December 2000. They were married for 49 years.

Josephine had a passion for sewing, crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint. She honed her sewing skills even though people of color were not hired as seamstresses until World War II. She was one of the first wave of women of color to have a career as a seamstress. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping and she took the phrase “shop till you drop” to heart.

Though Josephine didn’t earn her GED diploma until her 50s, she was a prolific reader and fluent in math and algebra. German Rosario taught Josephine to play the piano as a child and in turn she taught her daughters to play the piano as well. Josephine enjoyed traveling and her sightseeing highlights included Okinawa, Japan and to the homeland where her parents were born, Puerto Rico.

She leaves to remember her life daughters Lydia McIntosh and Sylvia Hickman, grandsons, Phillip and Christopher Hickman, and sons-in-laws, Vaughn Hickman and Larry Dean.

She will also be remembered by her niece and nephew-in-law Estelle and Fred Bowen, friends, Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, caregivers at Element Care and Nevins Nursing Home, her special caregiver, Nurse Mary Kamau, her long-time Social Worker, Fran Eisenman, and the neighbors and staff at Merrivista Senior Living.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the calling hours on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 2-4 PM at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. Her funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Nevins Nursing and Rehab Centre, 12 Ingalls Ct. Methuen, MA 01844, Friends of Bethany, 10 Phoenix Row, Haverhill, MA 01832, or Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, 280 Merrimack St. Suite 400, Lawrence, MA 01843.
