Obituary for Hugh G. Pearson

Hugh Garland Pearson (Hughie, Papa Hughie, Gramps) 92, of Haverhill, MA passed away on December 25th, 2018, in the comfort of his Ayers Village home of 63 years. The son of Ralph and Grace Pearson, Hugh was born in Haverhill September 21, 1926. He was predeceased by his adored wife Shirley Waitt Pearson in 2007.
He was a hero, mentor, friend and loving father to Diane Gage of Haverhill, MA, Laurie Ocasio and son-in-law Larry Ocasio of Summerville, SC and his son Scott Pearson (who predeceased him in 2015). Hugh also leaves his loving grandson and adventure side kick, Justin Gage, his wife Dee Ann, his great grandson, Hunter Gage, of Hampton NH and Scott’s wife, daughter in law, Patti Pearson.
Hugh is also survived by his granddaughter Dawn Marie Naffah and great grandson Owen O’Neill, grandson Keith Pearson and great grandchildren Christopher, Madison, Seth and Cameron.
Hugh nurtured close relationships with his niece and nephew, Robin Pearson Cogan of Ipswich MA/SC and Benjamin Pearson of Durham, Maine and his loyal friends, Michael and Tilly Quinn of Haverhill. In addition, he leaves his beloved best friend and neighbor of 60 years, Joanie Mouton and her daughter Janet Donovan (who adopted “Mr. P” years ago and kept an angelic watch over him for many years).
His “real job” for decades was Project District Engineer for New England Telephone Co. but Hugh’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for sports, nature and especially Haverhill’s history showed up at every turn of his life, including his last turns on the ski slopes at age 89.
As a teen, he taught riding and led summer camp caravans of horses riding from Bradford to Lake Winnipesaukee NH, camping overnight on the way. He later founded The Bradford Riding Academy Stables with buddy Bob Hughes.
In WW11 he rode out the big typhoon in Okinawa Bay on an injured Navy tug. After the war, he returned to marry Shirley. In 1949 Hugh, along with best friend, Kenny Boyd founded The Bradford Ski Tow, renting the hills from a farmer, clearing the trees and hooking up a truck engine in a shack at the top to pull the first tow. There is now a black diamond trail there named “Hugh’s Run”.
As a young dad, Hugh was a baseball coach for P.A.L. and a Boy Scout leader in Ayers Village. He served as Captain of the Ayers Village Fire Department with 33 years of service. His interest in antique automobiles and vintage license plates grew and he began collecting Automobilia. A 39-year member of The Antique License Plates Collectors of America, he restored a 1931 Model A U.S. Mail Truck (which is now displayed at The Smithsonian in DC).
His most treasured memories were of the annual fall deer hunting weeks at The Pearson Camp, Rangeley, ME with “the Boys”…it wasn’t just the hunting it was the camaraderie that touched his heart.
The thing Hugh was most proud of, and excelled at, was relationships. His greatest joy was being a part of the close-knit neighborhood of Ayers Village. Hugh Pearson was a man of great honor, with a powerful moral compass, who was enormously respected, unfailingly generous with his time and wisdom, funny, direct, a great storyteller and wonderful Dad. He was an expert at collecting loyal and loving friends. He will be greatly missed.
His Celebration of Life will be held at The Roma Restaurant, Bradford MA on Saturday Jan 12th from 1:00-4:30 pm. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Haverhill and Bradford. In lieu of flowers please consider The Wounded Warriors Project or Emmaus House Haverhill.
