Obituary for Ralph M. Becker

Ralph M. Becker, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, age 97, passed away on May 17, 2017 in his home at The Chamberlin in Fort Monroe, Virginia. Ralph Becker was born in Haverhill Massachusetts on September 19, 1919. He loved to tell people that his birthdate was 9/19/1919. He was one of eight children born to Russian immigrants, the late Robert and Dora Becker. He was preceded in death by his brothers William, Harold and Saul Becker; and sisters Katherine Becker, Evelyn Simon and Roni Wiseberg, all of blessed memory. Ralph loved his family more than anything in the world and cared endlessly about their health and happiness.

Ralph began his career as an executive in his father’s shoe factory in Massachusetts, and later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to assume an executive position with Butler Shoes. He left Butler Shoes in the early 1960s to open a discount store, Miracle City, with his brother, Saul Becker, in Huntsville, Alabama. Soon after that Ralph and his brother Harold and brother in law Howard Wiseberg opened a shoe factory, Dixie Shoe, in Eufaula, Alabama. For many years Ralph was very involved in Atlanta real estate, founding First Fidelity Realty with his brother Saul. They built numerous apartment and condominium projects and the first four Pizza Hut restaurants in Atlanta. The company also managed commercial real estate around the Atlanta area.

Ralph followed in his father’s footsteps in actively supporting numerous Jewish causes. His father was a major fund raiser for the United Jewish Appeal in 1948 at the creation of the State of Israel. Ralph actively supported his synagogue, The Temple in Atlanta, The United Jewish Appeal and other causes. He was a member of Rodef Sholom Temple in Newport News, Virginia.
Ralph lived in Atlanta until 1996, when he retired to West Palm Beach, Florida to pursue his love of golf and playing bridge. In 2013 he relocated to The Chamberlin in Hampton, Virginia to be closer to family.

Ralph is survived by his son, Dr. William Becker and his wife Dr. Sherri Becker of Yorktown, Virginia; his daughter, Heidi Becker of Atlanta and his two beloved grandchildren Robyn Becker and Ryan Becker. He is also survived by his sister, Jackie Braverman, of New York City, sisters-in-law Sylvia Becker and Mary Jane Becker of Atlanta, Georgia and numerous nieces and extended family.

The family would like to thank Ralph’s caring aides and the staff at the Chamberlin.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday May 21st at 11:45 AM in the Children of Israel Cemetery in Haverhill, MA. Arrangements are by the H.L.
