Obituary for Leslie Edward "Sonny" Haskell, Jr.

Leslie Edward "Sonny" Haskell, Jr., a lifelong resident of Haverhill and beloved husband of Margaret Haskell (Austin) passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a period of declining health.

Leslie graduated from Haverhill High School in 1954 where he met Margaret, the love of his life. Leslie and Margaret were wed on November 2 1958. Soon after, he was drafted into the United States Army. He had many stories to tell about his experiences while stationed in Greenland. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1964. After his release, he worked for Spring Hill Dairy as a delivery man. Following his time at Spring Hill, he became a regional manager for Cyr Oil Company. He later became the superintendent of the Elmwood Cemetery in Bradford where he worked for 30 years. Leslie also served as Captain of the Rocks Village Fire Department for many years. During this time, he and Margaret raised five children.

Leslie was a quiet, gentle man and was very well respected in the community. He was a lover of everything outdoors. He had the utmost respect for nature. He also had an amazing work ethic. No job was ever complete unless he gave 110% of himself. He instilled all of these beliefs in his children.

His genuine love of animals always drew them to him. He had many pets over the years and was known for bringing home a stray dog or cat when you least expected it. It brought him much joy.

Leslie will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret of 59 years as well as their five children, daughter Lynda Sheehan and her husband Brian of Haverhill, daughter Elizabeth Haskell and her companion Charles Millett of Florida, son Richard Haskell of Groveland, daughter Ann Yanakakis and her fiancé Tom Barrett of Danville, NH, son James Haskell and his wife Melissa of New Mexico and six grandchildren including Matthew Sheehan and his wife Jennifer, Heather Bailey and her husband Christopher, Corey and Lindsay Yanakakis, Zoeigh and Leslie Haskell and also a great granddaughter, Bryanna Sheehan.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the calling hours on Thursday, March 2nd from 4-7 PM at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home 210 South Main St. (Rte. 125) Bradford. Private entombment will be held in the Elmwood Mausoleum, Bradford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
