Obituary for George F. Brown

George Brown died July 11, 2017 at Hathorne Hill in Danvers. George was born in Lawrence, MA, graduated from Lawrence High School in 1944, joined the Army Air Corps and trained as a ball turret gunner and was about to be sent into action when the war ended. He spent eight months in Germany on clean-up.

George was the son of the late Josiah and Winifred Brown. His father, Cy, was well-known Lawrence figure, who owned the Genoa Café for over 45 years. Many references have been made about him over the years in a number of publications. George’s remaining family members are: Winifred Barrett, Bernice Powers, Richard and Robert Brown. Elinor Trottier, another sister, is deceased.

George joined Bolta Company in Lawrence in 1947 starting as a material handler and ended his career forty years later as production manager and department manager. His career carried him from Lawrence to Reading, MA., then to a stellar ten years in Columbus, MS., where they still have many friends.

Married for 52 years to Sandra Wengel Brown, they lived in West Newbury, Columbus, MS and Merrimac, MA. They have also resided at Salisbury Beach for over 40 years. For twenty years they owned a condo in Destin, Florida and treasured their time there.

For two months in 2004 they traveled to Europe on a self-arranged trip to Arezzo, Italy and then to the Cotswold in England; also they toured Paris and Giverny. The shopped in local supermarkets and took all modes of transportation and were treated so well wherever they went. A highlight in their lives.

George has three children: Josiah Brown (Kara) of Cambridge, Cynthia Mitchell (Brian) of Rye, NH and the deceased George Brown. He also leaves six grandchildren: Harrison and Ella Brown, Whitney, Dane and Morgan Mitchell and Meaghan Murphy.

Please raise a cup or glass to a very good man who left too soon.
