Obituary for Charles S. Manikas

Charles S. Manikas, 98, of Plaistow NH., passed away Monday, March 20, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston.

He was born in Haverhill on March 25, 1918, the son of the late Socrates and Victoria (Dimitriou) Manikas.

Charles was educated in the Haverhill school system and graduated from Haverhill High School.

He enlisted in the Army shortly after graduation and served honorably during WWII in Africa and Italy.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Manikas was employed as a shoe cutter in local Haverhill shoe shops. He was also a self employed real estate agent and owned and managed rental properties. His attitudes toward work and conservation were shaped by the hardships of the Great Depression. He worked hard and long, especially long.

He was a member of the Holy Apostles St. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Haverhill and a member of AHEPA.

Mr. Manikas was predeceased by his loving wife Ida (Varnavas) Manikas who passed away in 2013.

He is survived by his three children, Stuart Manikas of Plaistow, NH, Victoria Hastie and her husband Robert of Centerville, VA., and Judith Sparanges of Shrewsbury, two grandchildren, Jessica Hastie and Christopher Sparanges as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours on Sunday afternoon, March 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, March 27, beginning at 10:00 at the Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 in Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill. Interment with Military Honors will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Philoptochos at Holy Apostles Sts.
