Obituary for Benedict Gesmundo

Benedict Gesmundo, 90 of Haverhill, passed away Monday, October 23, at Country Manor, Newburyport.

He was born on September 9, 1927 in Haverhill, the son of the late Paul and Mary (Lomazzo) Gesmundo.

Benedict was educated in the Haverhill public school system and graduated from Haverhill High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at Merrimack College.

He served as a corporal in US Army Air Force during World War II. He was employed at Sylvania and Raytheon before his retirement.

Ben was a skillful handyman and enjoyed fixing things. Later in life he became a thoughtful poet. His clever poetry describing family and friends marked every birthday and holiday with a personal and often humorous poem. But he was a great observer of people, and this was conveyed in his poetry. His poem, ‘In My Sister’s Yard’, a serious and moving description of family dinner celebrations ‘al fresco’ in Bradford, was published in an American Anthology in the 1990’s. He loved all animals and brought us the kittens who later became our beloved family cats.

He will be remembered for his great interest in alternative health and nutrition, informing us all of the earliest research and vitamins, years before it became generally known and accepted. He was ahead of his time and he was usually right. He possessed a keen intellect and loved the banter on certain talk radio programs, as well theories about outer space and the universe. Ben will be dearly missed by his family who rest in the comfort that he will be reunited with the many relatives who have gone home to Jesus before him.

Benedict is survived by his sister, Teresa Fiorentini of Bradford; niece Jane Fiorentini-Steward of Salem, MA; nephews Steven Fiorentini of Haverhill and Louis Fiorentini also of Haverhill. He leaves several cousins both in and out of state, and his close cousin Paul Antonelli of Weston, MA.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Friday morning, October 27 at 10:00 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at Sacred Hearts Church, 165 South Main St. (RT. 125) Bradford. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Haverhill & Bradford.
