Elizabeth Patricia Farnsworth, RN

Elizabeth Patricia Farnsworth, RN, 90, of Haverhill died Sunday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.

She was born in Ayer, MA on April 14, 1917, daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Savia) Farnsworth.

She was educated in the Leominster Schools and graduated from Leominster High School, Class of 1936. She also graduated from St. Josephs School of Nursing in Nashua, NH, Class of 1940.

Miss Farnsworth started her nursing career at St. Josephs Hospital until 1943 when she moved to Haverhill. She was employed at the former Hale Hospital in Haverhill for 34 years, retiring in 1976.

She was sister of the late John L. Farnsworth and Francis C. Farnsworth. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and a close friend Joan Willett of Haverhill.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Thursday morning at 11:00 at St. John the Baptist Church, Haverhill. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Jaffrey, NH.

Visitation will precede the Funeral Mass on Thursday morning from 10:00-10:45 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home 106 Summer St. Haverhill.

Harriet G. (Bergeron) Vacirca
November 25, 2007

 

Mrs. Harriet G. “Raye” (Bergeron) Vacirca, of Haverhill, died Sunday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

Born in Haverhill, Mrs. Vacirca had been an area resident most of her life.

She was employed as a payroll clerk for the former New England Sears Comp. of Boston. After her marriage, Raye was a stay at home mother who enjoyed doing various volunteer works. She was a member of ST. John The Baptist Church where she taught CCD for a number of years. For 24 years, Mrs. Vacirca worked during the elections, first as a clerk and later as a warden.

Raye is survived by her husband of 51 years, Joseph Vacirca of Haverhill, a daughter, Linda Vacirca and son-in-law, Louis Doucet of Salem, NH, grandchildren, Tyler J. and Tegan L. Vacirca Doucet also of Salem, NH, and a sister, Nancy Livingston of St. Petersburg, FL. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Mass Wednesday morning at 11:00 in St. John The Baptist Church, Haverhill.

Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill.

Gaston Breton
November 25, 2007

 

Mr. Gaston Breton, 73, of Haverhill passed away Sunday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.

He was born in Lime Ridge, Quebec, Canada son of the late Philibert and Clemence (Theberge) Breton.

Gaston was educated in Lime Ridge and moved to Haverhill in the early 1960’s. He was a very well known self employed finish carpenter and was the founder of the Zodiac Club on Emerson St. Haverhill. Mr. Breton was a member of the Kingston Vets Club and life member of the Crescent Yacht Club in Bradford.

He is survived by his wife Loralane (Murphy) Breton of Haverhill, sons Andre G. Breton and his wife Angela of Haverhill, Gaston Breton of Key West, FL, daughter Jacqueline Bushong of Englewood, FL, 2 brothers Henry Breton of Ontario and Andre Breton of Montreal, 5 grandchildren Howie Bushong of Laconia, NH, Andreu Breton of Haverhill, Christy Bushong of Laconia, Alyssa Breton of Haverhill, and Bailey Breton of Key West, many step children and step grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service on Friday at 11:00 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston, NH.

Elizabeth A. Mulligan

Miss Elizabeth A. Mulligan, 40 of Haverhill, died Friday at her home.

She was born in Haverhill July 19, 1967 daughter of Maureen A. (Finnegan) Mulligan and the late John J. Mulligan.

Educated in the Haverhill Public Schools, she later moved to the Cape, and was a graduate of Bourne High School.

For many years Elizabeth we involved in financing of vehicles and mortgages, and prior to her illness had been employed at Ameriquest.


Her survivors include her mother Maureen A. (Finnegan) Mulligan of Haverhill, a brother John J. and his wife Anne-Marie Mulligan of Haverhill a sister Margaret A. and her husband Timothy Miller of Haverhill and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Joseph F. Mulligan.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to her Funeral Monday morning at 10 am at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home 106 Summer St. Haverhill

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell.

Cecile T. Lemanski
November 21, 2007

 

Cecile T. Lemanski, 76 of Haverhill, died peacefully after a short illness at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill.

She was born in Worcester, April 16, 1931, daughter of the late Leo and Frances (Mielech) Sulkoski.

Mrs. Lemanski was a graduate of St. Mary’s Grammer School and High School in Worcester. She was employed as a secretary. Prior to moving to Haverhill in 1966, Mrs. Lemanski resided in Dayton, Ohio, for 10 years. Upon her retirement from the former Hale Hospital in 1995, she was employed part time at the Haverhill Country Club. Most recently, she was a devoted grandmother caring for the apple of her eye after school, her granddaughter, Kimberly Jean Roope of Haverhill.

She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Lorraine Post 29 in Haverhill.

A proud member of Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford, Mrs. Lemanski enjoyed polka music, shopping, cooking and spending time with her family. 

Her survivors include a daughter, Linda F. and her husband Mark A. Roope, granddaughter, Kimberly J. Roope all of Haverhill, her sister Genevieve Janiszewski of Worcester and her godchild Theodore Knapik, Jr of North Grafton, Ma. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. 
She was also the sister of the late Joseph Sulkoski, Helen Pawlowski, Hedwig Furmanick and Sophie Knapik.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Tuesday morning at 9:30 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 South Main St., Bradford, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 in Sacred Heart’s Church, So. Main St., Bradford.

Ronald G. Brown, Sr.
November 19, 2007

Mr. Ronald G. Brown, Sr., 72, a lifelong Haverhill resident, died Monday November 19, 2007.

He was born in Haverhill, February 18, 1935, son of the late Gardner C. and Doris (Bilodeau) Brown.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Brown served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of the AMVETS Post 147, Haverhill, American Legion, Post 34, Plaistow, NH, and the Crescent Yacht Club, Bradford.

For several years he was a self-employed flooring contractor.

His survivors include a son, Ronald G. Brown, Jr., of Haverhill, a daughter, Debbi-Lyn Trager and her husband Michael of Connecticut. He was the father of the late Alan and Ronald G. (Gary) Brown. He also leaves a brother Kenneth A. Brown and his wife Rose Marie of Haverhill, a sister, Maureen Rowe of Haverhill, three grandchildren, Stacy of Florida, Tiffany of Haverhill, and Alexandra of Connecticut, as well as several nieces and nephews.

James F. Howes, Jr.
November 15, 2007

Mr. James F. Howes, Jr., 63, of Bradford, died Thursday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

He was born in Woburn, December 2, 1943, son of the late James F. and Elsie M. (Oldford) Howes, Sr.

Raised and educated in Tewksbury, he later attended Cape Cod Community College.

For four years he served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Otis Air Force Base.

Mr. Howes moved to Bradford in 1978. For over 40 years he worked as a Union Ironworker with Local 7, Boston. He also spent many years remodeling homes as an independent contractor.

A lifelong motorsports enthusiast, he enjoyed riding and racing motorcycles and cars throughout New England. Mr. Howes also enjoyed mountain biking and cherished spending time with his family.

His survivors include his wife of 31 years, Jeanne M. (Lenihan) Howes of Bradford, 4 sons, Jason and his wife Joanna Howes, Joshua Howes, Jonathan Howes, Justin Howes all of Bradford, a daughter, Lisa and her husband William Gillis of S. Dennis, 2 brothers, Jack Howes of Windham, NH, David and his wife Diane Howes of Windham, NH, a sister, Donna Whitten of Arizona, 2 grandchildren, Jaclyne Gillis of S. Dennis, and Joseph Howes of Bradford, as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Philip A. Feigenbaum
November 14, 2007

 

Mr. Philip A. Feigenbaum, 83 of Haverhill and Lake Worth Florida, died unexpectedly at his Florida residence on Wednesday.

He was born in Fall River, MA, July 7, 1924, son of the late Benjamin and Fanny Feigenbaum.

At an early age his family moved to Newburyport, where he was educated in the Newburyport Public Schools and was a graduate of Newburyport High School. He also attended Ryder College in New Jersey.

He owned and operated the former Urbanite Footwear Company of Newburyport, MA, and Stand Outs Footwear Company of Haverhill, MA..

Mr. Feigenbaum was a long term resident of Haverhill prior to moving to Grantham, NH after his retirement. He was married to the late Shirley (Perlo) Feigenbaum and after her death in April of 1991 he lived part time in Haverhill and Lake Worth Florida.

He was a member of Temple Emanu-El and the Haverhill Country Club

His survivors include a son, Paul M. and his wife Emily Feigenbaum of Haverhill; two daughters, Ronna F. and her husband Philip Wise of Concord, NH. and Dale and her husband Jeffrey Gordon of Boston; a brother, Maurice Feigenbaum of Cape Cod; a sister, Etta Bernstein of No. Andover; 6 grandchildren, Andrew and Amelia Feigenbaum, Susan and Mark Wise, Dana and Abby Gordon; a brother and sister in law, Lionel and Barbara Perlo of Newton, MA and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor M. (Hussey) Masys
November 11, 2007

 

Mrs. Eleanor M. (Hussey) Masys, 87, of Haverhill, died Sunday at The Oxford, Haverhill.

She was born in Newburyport, June 25, 1920, daughter of the late William and Augusta (Ryan) Hussey.

Educated in the Newburyport school system, Mrs. Masys attended Newburyport High School, and moved to Haverhill in 1945.

She worked at the Haverhill High School Cafeteria, and, prior to her marriage, was employed at HYTRON, Newburyport.

Her survivors include her husband of 62 years, Boles C. Masys of Haverhill, a daughter, Donna A. Coyle and her husband William of Plaistow, NH three sons, Joseph W. and his wife Patricia Masys of Haverhill, Robert A. and his wife Nancy Masys of Haverhill, Kevin J. and his wife Patricia Masys of Haverhill , nine grandchildren, Kevin Coyle and Kristina Bourque of Plaistow, NH, Joseph, Brian and Atty. Caitlin M. Masys of Haverhill, Cara Watson of Atkinson, NH, Robert Masys, II, of Stoneham, Jonathan and Matthew Masys of Haverhill, ten great grandchildren, Devin, Dylan and Derek Coyle of Plaistow, NH, Megan, Ryan and Cailyn Bourque of Plaistow, NH, Jake and Ethan Masys of Haverhill, Zachary Seaman and Emily Watson both of Atkinson, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Masys was also the sister of the late William Hussey, Jr., Robert Hussey and Kenneth Hussey.

John J. Driscoll
November 10, 2007

Mr. John J. Driscoll, 77, a lifelong resident of Haverhill passed away peacefully on Saturday morning Oct. 10th at Whittier Rehab Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born in Haverhill on Oct. 16, 1930, son of the late Timothy J. and Helen (Ring) Driscoll.

He graduated from St. James High School, Class of 1949 and was and Army veteran of the Korean War serving for 4 years as Sergeant First Class. After returning from the war, John attended a radio and television technology institute in Boston.

Mr. Driscoll was employed at Lucent Technologies for over 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was also the owner and operator of J&F Cleaning Co. in Haverhill for 30 years.

He was instrumental in founding and organizing the creation of the Korean War Veteran Memorial in GAR Park in Haverhill. He was a member of All Saints Parish, VFW, DAV, and the CWA Union Local 1366.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather that will be sadly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Mrs. Joan E. (Crowley) Driscoll, his 6 children, Timothy J. and his wife Suzanne of Haverhill, Susan K. and her husband Thomas Hallworth of E. Hampstead, NH, Kathleen A. and her husband Raymond Richard of Newton, NH, Colleen E. Driscoll and her fiancé Michael McLaughlin of Beverly, MA, Michael P. and his wife Christine of Plaistow, and Daniel J. and his wife Kristine of Plaistow, 17 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James F. Driscoll, and best friend of the late Paul “Sonny” Millette.

Robert G. Marzioli

Mr. Robert G. Marzioli, 67, of Bradford, died Tuesday morning at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, Haverhill.

He was born in Haverhill, March 11, 1940, son of the late Alfred and Lilly (Camarato) Marzioli.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Marzioli graduated from Haverhill High class of 1958.
During the Viet Nam War he served in the United States Army in Army Intelligence.

For over 27 years he was employed as a Technician for Xerox Corporation.

Along with his wife they operated Puddle-Dock Antiques. He enjoyed reading, literature, skiing and was a member of the Haverhill Historical Society.
His survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joyce (Castellina) Marzioli of Bradford, a son, Jeffrey Marzioli of Bradford, two brothers Alfred Marzioli and Richard Marzioli both of Haverhill, 3 grandchildren, Alix, Margaret and Sidney Marzioli, his mother-in-law, Vera Castellina of Bradford, his aunt, Betty Barbuti of Haverhill, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Marzioli was also the brother of the late Marine Capt. Joseph Marzioli.

Frederick Douglas Snow, Jr.
November 6, 2007

 

Mr. Frederick Douglas Snow, Jr., 69, of E. Hampstead, NH, and Jensen Beach, FL, died Tuesday evening at his home in E. Hampstead, NH, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Haverhill, Sept. 6, 1938, the late Frederick Snow, Sr. and Yvonne J. (Marcotte) Madden of Haverhill.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Snow graduated from Essex Agricultural School, Danvers. He earned his Associates Degree from Wentworth Institute.

For over 20 years he was employed as a superintendent for J.F. White Construction, Boston, from where he retired in 1990.

For several years, after his retirement, he was employed as a chief estimator for Kidder Concrete Cutting, Plaistow, NH.

Mr. Snow was a longstanding member of the Carpenters Local #67. An outdoor enthusiast he was an accomplished fisherman, hunter and avid gardener. A fantastic amateur chef, everybody loved to be at Fred’s table.

A member of Saggahew Lodge A.F. & A.M., he was very active in the Condo Associations in both Florida and New Hampshire serving as President of both for several years.

Beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, and brother, besides his mother his survivors include his wife of 15 years, Jean (Douglass) Snow of E. Hampstead, NH, two daughters, Theresa Craig of Haverhill, Kellie and her husband Thomas Greer of Plaistow, NH, two stepsons, David R. and his wife Laurie Webb of Alton, NH, Scott Webb of Gulfport, FL, two brothers, Stephen A. Snow of Newton, NH, John and his wife Bobbie Prue of MD, four sisters, Carolyn I. and her husband Frank Damour of Henniker, NH, Wendy S. and her husband Clyde Fogg of Lee, NH, Kimberly H. Snow and her husband Michael Towle of Amesbury, Laurel B. and her husband O. Richard Corelle of Watertown, five grandchildren, Ashley E. and Bailey Greer of Plaistow, NH, Justin Craig and his fiancé Jocelyn Deuplisea all of Haverhill, Andrew and Caleb Webb of Alton, NH, two sisters-in-law, Rosalie and her husband William Dehart of No. Andover and Elizabeth and her husband John Pichowitz of Plaistow, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Snow was the husband of the late Maryann (Poirier) Snow who died in 1990.

Robert C. Elliott

Mr. Robert C. Elliott, 78, of Bradford, a former 30 year resident of Plum Island, died Saturday morning at Caritas Holy Family Hospital, Methuen.

He was born in Lynn, April 30, 1929, son of the late Clinton and Violet (Grey) Elliott, and was educated in the Lynn school system.

During the Korean War he served in the United States Army.

Mr. Elliott was a self employed carpenter, a trade he taught all of his sons.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, camping, time with his family and was an accomplished artist.

His survivors include four sons, Wayne and his wife Susan Elliott of Newton, NH, Robert and his wife Holly Elliott of Lawrence, Brian and his wife Georgianna Elliott of Newburyport, Steven and his wife Debra Elliott of Salisbury, a daughter, Kimberly Shennett of Amesbury, two sisters, Ernestine Parks of CA, Winifred Castle of NH, 9 grandchildren, a great grandson, his life mate Sally King and her son, Anthony King both of Bradford, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ann G. (Fallon) Wilson, 79, of Bradford, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston.

She was born in Haverhill, June 22, 1928, daughter of the late James F. and Elizabeth M. (Andre) Fallon, and was educated in St. James Grammar School and St. James High School.

Mrs. Wilson was employed at Western Electric, in the local shoe industry, and until her retirement in 1990, for DAVCO.

A member of Sacred Heart’s Church, Mrs. Wilson enjoyed traveling, bingo and was an avid reader.

She was the wife of the late Neal E. Wilson who died in 2000 and mother of the late Paul D. Wilson who died in 1996, and her survivors include a son, James E. and his wife Mary Wilson of Sturbridge, two daughters, Theresa A. and her husband Faris Blancher of Haverhill, Karen M. and her husband Aaron Fuller of Worcester, 3 grandchildren, James E. Wilson, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Oxford, MA, Quinn A. and Tess V. Fuller of Worcester, step grandchildren, Kelly A. Vosnakis and her husband Steven, of E. Brookfield, Eileen DeMings and her husband David of Sturbridge, and several nieces and nephews including a special niece Donna Paulson of Oviedo, FL.

Richard R. Burton

Mr. Richard R. Burton, 74, of Georgetown, died Monday evening at Mass General Hospital, Boston.

He was born in Boston, June 3, 1933, son of the late Leroy and Mary (Cavenaugh) Burton, Sr., and was educated in the Medford school system.

For over 50 years he was employed as an oil burner technician. He retired from Brooks School Andover in the early 1990’s. Prior to this he worked for Busfield-Cranton, Haverhill.

He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness South Congregation, Haverhill.

In his youth, he enjoyed working on cars perfecting his mechanic skills

He was the husband of the late Diane (Lofthouse) Burton who died in 2002 and his survivors include a daughter, Hope Ouellette of Haverhill, a sister, Joan Friedlin of Pitman, NJ, two grandchildren, Garrison and Hannah Ouellette of Haverhill, sisters-in-law, Mabel Burton of Nevada and Mona Burton of Massachusetts, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burton was also the brother of the late Edward Godfrey, Leroy Burton, Jr. and Ralph Burton.

Mr. Speros Frangedakis, 86, a lifelong resident of Haverhill died Monday evening at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverhill.

He was born in Haverhill on Dec. 25, 1920, son of the late George and Demetra (Javalanis) Frangedakis.

He was educated in the Haverhill schools and was an Army veteran of WWII, receiving a Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.

Mr. Frangedakis was employed at the former Western Electric for many years, was a member of the Crescent Yacht Club, and enjoyed all sports.

He was the husband of the late Lillian M. (Scott) Frangedakis, who died in 1976, and is survived by his sisters Jenny and her husband George Panagoupalas of Dracut, and Olga Martinis of Haverhill, brothers Arthur  Frangedakis and his wife Susan of St. Clair Shores, MI, and Francis Frangedakis of Plaistow, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral on Friday morning at 10:00 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 at the Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St. Haverhill. Mrs. Claudette E. (Sinotte) Randall, 74, of Haverhill, died Sunday morning at Wingate at Haverhill.

She was born in Boston, June 14, 1933, daughter of the late Albert C. and Germaine (Lemay) Sinotte.

Educated in St. Joseph’s Grammar School, Mrs. Randall graduated from St. James High School.

She was employed as a Teller at the former Family Bank, Haverhill.

From 1970 to 1988 she resided in Florida.

She was the wife of the late Gilbert E. Randall who died in 1988 and her survivors include a brother, Richard and his wife Sharon Sinotte of Haverhill, two nephews Courtney and his wife Candi Sinotte and their children, Alexis and Nicholas, Christian and his wife Donna Sinotte, a niece Kymberly and her husband Shaun Kelly.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Haverhill.

 

 

Roy M. Simpson

Mr. Roy M. Simpson, 65 of Haverhill, died Saturday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his family.

He was born in Dundee, Scotland, July 9, 1942, son of the late Thomas and Catherine (McKelvie) Simpson, and was educated in Scotland. 

While in Scotland he served a five year apprenticeship and became a Marine Engineer, and later was employed in the British Merchant Navy

In l968 he came to the United States and had lived in Andover, Lawrence and Amesbury, prior to moving to Rocks Village in l999.

Prior to his illness Roy had been employed by J.H. Horne and Sons , which later became Horne Machine in Lawrence.

He was a devoted hard working husband and father and was a football fanatic that enjoyed both American and European Football games.

His survivors include his wife of 42 years. Sheena M. (Brown) Simpson of Haverhill, a daughter Sheena C. Simpson and her husband Andrea Puddu of Haverhill a twin brother Thomas and his wife Isobel Simpson of Scotland, two grandchildren Alessandro and Massimo Puddu of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews.

His family will be receiving friends and relatives on Tuesday from 4-7 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home 106 Summer St. Haverhill.

Funeral Services will be held at a later time in his beloved Scotland.

Nellie (Prochniewicz) Langlois

Mrs. Nellie (Prochniewicz) Langlois, 87 of Haverhill, died Friday evening at her son’s home while being cared for by family and Hospice.

She was born in Haverhill, Feb 10, 1920, daughter of the late Maryan and Karalina (Czerepak) Prochniewicz.

A lifelong resident of Haverhill, Nellie had attended the Haverhill Public Schools and was a l938 Graduate of Haverhill High School.

Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for many years at the Imperial Cleaners.

Nellie was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren Heather and Alison. Together they enjoyed many excursions shopping and dining out. She had a love of life and was an avid reader and gardener.

She was married to the late Paul Francis Langlois who died in l980 and her survivors include her son Asst. Supt of Haverhill Schools Richard Langlois and his wife Mary of Bradford, two grandchildren Heather and Alison Langlois a brother Bennie and his wife Jennie Prochniewicz of CT. and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Jennie Marques.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to her Funeral Wednesday morning at 9:30 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel beneath Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford.  Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Alden Charles Johnson

Mr. Alden Charles Johnson, 93, of Groveland passed away Thursday evening at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

He was born in Lawrence on April 2, 1914, son of the late Charles and Anita (Fontaine) Johnson.

He was educated in the Lawrence Schools and was a Navy veteran of WWII receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 4 stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 star, American Area Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Mr. Johnson was the superintendent of the Westwood Cemetery in Andover, Immaculate Conception Polish Cemetery in Methuen for 40 years, was the proprietor of Ward 6 Social and Political Club in So. Lawrence and retired from the former Western Electric in 1975.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Lawrence and was the treasurer at the church for over 40 years. Mr. Johnson enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and dog and horse racing.

He was the husband of the late Jenny (Duda) Johnson who died in 1980, and is survived by his daughter, retired Haverhill public school teacher Carolyn K. Johnson, his adopted daughter Dorothy K. Kardas PSY.D.TH.D. both of Groveland, as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Nov. 8, 2007 at 8:00 a.m. in All Saints Church, Haverhill. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Immaculate Conception Polish Cemetery, Methuen

 

 

 

Fortunata C. (Crisafulli) Piccolo

Fortunata Piccolo, 81 beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away Wednesday October 24 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital with her family at her side.

She was born in Sicily on February 25, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Maria and Vito Crisafulli.

She married Joseph Piccolo, Sr. in 1948 and migrated to the US.

Mrs. Piccolo was employed at the former Western Electric, North Andover for 21 years and was a member of the Pioneers before her retirement.

She was a wonderful mother to 6 children. She had one birth son, Joseph, Jr. 2 step-sons, Morris and Daniel and 3 step-daughters, Santa Janszewski, Grace Jameson and Rose Palmer. She was a grandmother of 3 grandchildren, Jason, Jared and Jonathan Piccolo and 15 step grandchildren. She had several cousins, nieces and nephews in Sicily, New York and Illinois.

She loved her family get togethers and cooking her famous meatballs and veal cutlets. She especially loved weddings, the Italian parades, her friends, family and the Italian Serenaders. She knew the true meaning of friendship, spent a lot of time with her elderly and sick friends, and would always go out of her way to help anyone.

Mr. Raymond A. Thayer 75 of Salem, NH and formerly of Haverhill, died Monday at he Merrimack Valley Hospital.

He was born in West Newbury Aug 27, 1932, son of the late Albert and Gladys (Snow) Thayer.

Ray was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools and attended Haverhill High School.

During the Korean War he served in the United States Navy.

For 50 years he was employed at the Haverhill Paperboard Company until his retirement in June of this year

Ray was a life member of the Korean War Veterans Association, VFW Post 29 of Haverhill, the AMVETS of Haverhill Post #147, the Saggahew Lodge A.F&A.M. the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley Of Lowell, and a member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church

His survivors include his wife of 34 years June E. (Oickle) and he is survived by his children Dean, Raymond, Glen, Scott, , Steven, Buddy, Sharon Cannata, Bonnie and 
Julie Thayer, his brother and sisters Allen Thayer Janice Thayer Carol Dodier, 18 Grandchildren 13 Great Grandchildren several nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was the father of the late Ronald and the brother of the late Meredith.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to his funeral Friday morning at 11 a.m at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bennie Ravich, 102, of Haverhill passed away Saturday at his residence, Haverhill Crossings.

He was born on August 11, 1905 in Russia, son of the late Morris and Fannie (Schlackman) Ravich.

In 1910, Bennie moved to Haverhill, was educated in the Haverhill schools and was an Army veteran of WWII. He was employed in the kosher poultry business and worked at the former Giant Value until his retirement. After his retirement, he was a crossing guard at the Walnut School for 17 years.

Bennie was a member of Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill and the Haverhill Country Club.

He was the husband of the late Ruth M. (Mysel) Ravich and is survived by his stepson Harold I. Blotner and his wife Suzanne B. of Madison, WI, stepdaughter Frances E. Steinberg of Philadelphia, 3 step grandchildren David, Donald, and Richard Blotner, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the graveside service Tuesday Oct. 23rd at 11:00 in the Children of Israel Cemetery, Middle Rd. Haverhill.

There will be no memorial observance.

Mr. Louis A. Buchikos, 90, of Haverhill, died Thursday morning at Wingate at Haverhill.

He was born in Lawrence, October 9, 1917, son of the late George J. and Flora (Mandy) Buchikos.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Buchikos served in the Navy during World War II.

He was employed as a Tester at the former Western Electric and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

His survivors include a daughter, Andrea Remier of Charlston, NV, 2 brothers, Charles and Leo both of Haverhill, a sister, Virginia Colentoni of Barrington, NH, and 2 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

 

 

Rev. Dr. David B. Shirley
October 16, 2007

 

Rev. Dr. David B. Shirley, 94, formerly of Groveland and Manchester, NH passed away Tuesday at the Prescott House in No. Andover.

He was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 6, 1913, son of the late Daniel and Alma (Matson) Shirley.

He attended the Minneapolis schools and received his BA from Ripon College, Masters from University of Chicago and PHD from Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Prior to being ordained in October of 1952, he served as a foreign correspondent for Time magazine. He first served as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Closter, NJ then moved to Groveland serving as pastor of the Groveland Congregational Church from Dec. 1961 to June 1968. He later moved to Manchester serving at the Brookeside Congregational Church from 1968-1978 from which he retired.

He was a member of the Manchester Country Club, Haverhill Kiwanis Club, and the Georgetown Masonic Lodge.

He was the husband of the late Lillian (Bonomo) Shirley, who died in 1991 and father of the late David B. Shirley, Jr. His survivors include a daughter-in-law Elizabeth A. Shirley of Bradford, a brother Robert Hagstrom of Phoenix, AZ, sisters Nancy Sorenson and Patricia Hotchkiss both of Minneapolis, 2 grandchildren Craig R. Shirley and his wife Kristen of Bradford, and Lee-Ann and her husband Daniel Bergstrom of No. Andover, 4 great grandchildren Brendon D. and Brian C. Shirley, and Kelsey E. and Karli F. Smith, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill.
At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

October 16, 2007

 

Mr. Benjamin J. DiBiaso, 93, a lifelong resident of Groveland passed away peacefully Tuesday evening at Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport.

He was born at home in Groveland on Nov. 3, 1913, son of the late Giuseppe and Assunta (Pricolo) DiBiaso.

He was educated in the Groveland schools and was employed at Pope Machinery on River St. in Haverhill for 19 years and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 22 years until his retirement.

Mr. DiBiaso enjoyed playing cards; especially poker, bingo and the many trips he took to Las Vegas.

He was the husband of the late Roxie E. (Gibbons) DiBiaso, who died in 1996, and is survived by his 2 daughters Rita J. and her husband John Nierod and Christine A. and her husband Paul Parenteau, a brother Alfred DiBiaso all of Groveland, 6 grandchildren Paul, Richard, and Mark Parenteau, Jeffrey Nierod, Dino and Marisa DiBiaso, 1 great grandchild Lucien Parenteau, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was also the father of the late Joseph W. DiBiaso, who died in 1991, and brother of the late Mary Russo, Frank DiBiaso, Rocco Besso, and John DiBiaso.

Sel R. (Ruskin) Leed
October 15, 2007

 

Sel R. (Ruskin) Leed, 76, of Andover passed away Monday at Wingate of Andover with her children by her side.

She was born in Brookline, MA on April 25, 1931, daughter of the late Benjamin and Eleanor (Bates) Ruskin.

Sel was educated in the Brookline school system and did her undergraduate study at the University of Chicago where she majored in music and opera.

In 1952, she married Bernard J. Leed and ran her family’s business Ruskin Antiques on Charles St. in Boston for 25 years. She later joined her husband at Royal Jewelers in Andover which was established in 1948. She was the matriarch of Royal Jewelers for over 25 years.

Sel loved the arts, sang opera, traveled all over the world, was an avid reader, involved in community theater, and especially enjoyed the beach having residences in both Rye, NH and Palm Beach, FL. The love Sel embraced with her immediate family will be truly missed. 

She was the wife of the late Bernard J. Leed who died in 1985, and is survived by her second husband since 1987, Attorney Edward Greenspan of Andover, her children Steven B. Leed and his wife Elizabeth, Paula Leed and her husband Richard Aron, grandchildren Bernard and Caroline Leed all of Andover.

Myrtle F. (Ferguson) Dallon, 92 of Haverhill died Sunday at Penacook Place.

She was born in Haverhill Ma Feb 4, 1915, daughter of the late William and Bessie Ferguson, and was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools.

Prior to her retirement she had been employed as a Fancy Stitcher in the area shoe industry.

Myrtle enjoyed crocheting, and Bingo, and was a 30 year resident of Largo Fl.
An avid volunteer, she was the volunteer director of thrift shop in the Heritage Presbyterian Apartments and also has participated in many other volunteer opportunities prior to returning to Haverhill in 2006

She was married for over 60 years to the late Paul W. Dallon and her survivors include 2 daughters Patricia A. and her husband Peter E. Archibald of East Hampstead, NH. Barbara J. Tibbetts of Amesbury 5 Grandchildren 5 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will be receiving friends and relatives on Wednesday evening from 6-8 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 So. Main St. Bradford.

Mrs. Barbara (Gale) McLaughlin, 71, of Haverhill and formerly of Georgetown, died Friday evening at the Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

She was born in Somerville, December 17, 1935, daughter of the late Russell and Mary (Campbell) Gale.

Educated in the Belmont school system, she graduated from Belmont High School.

She earned her LPN from Beverly Hospital and was employed for over ten years at the former Hale Hospital.

A member of the Red Hat Society and Gadabouts, Mrs. McLaughlin resided in Sun City Florida for 5 years. While there she was a volunteer Security Guard and active in the area.

Her survivors include two daughters, Diane and her husband David Dolan of Haverhill, Linda and her husband Raymond Persichetti of Haverhill, two sons, Mark and his wife Kathy McLaughlin of Remsen, NY, David and his wife Tracey McLaughlin of Chichester, NH, a sister, Phyllis and her husband Gene Mueller of Sun City Center, FL, two brothers, Russell Gale of Nahant, Richard and his wife Sharon Gale of Waltham, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the former wife of the late Thomas McLaughlin and sister of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Wyman.

Mrs. Lorraine M. (LaValley) Schena, 76, a lifelong resident of Haverhill and Bradford passed away Thursday at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.

She was born in Haverhill on Oct. 18, 1930, daughter of the late Harry E. and Florida B. (Gelinas) LaValley. She was educated in the Haverhill schools, attended MacIntosh Business School, and obtained her Real Estate Broker’s license working alongside her husband.

Mrs. Schena was a former member of St. Rita’s Church and St. John the Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, cooking, crocheting and caring for her grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late Edward J. Schena who died in 1995 and mother of the late Carol A. Emmons who died in 2003.

She is survived by her children Judith A. Schena and her companion Robert Saccardo of Rockport, Edward P. Schena and his wife Michelle of Plaistow, and Paul J. Schena of Atkinson, 7 grandchildren Matthew E., Nicholas J., Callie L., Ashley E. and Benjamin P. Schena and Ashley A. and Michael B., Emmons, son-in-law Brian F. Emmons of Andover, brothers-in-law Richard A. Schena of Haverhill and Joseph A. Schena of New Port Richey, FL, and many cousins from the Haverhill area.

Mrs. Veronica T. (Moryl) Avella Patonay, 98, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning at Penacook Place in Haverhill.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1909 in the Three Rivers section of Palmer, MA, daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Woldjiel) Moryl.

Veronica attended the schools in Three Rivers, and was employed in a textile factory in the Three Rivers. She also had resided in Stamford, CT, where she was a nurse’s aide for 30 years at Stamford Hospital, prior to moving to Haverhill.

She was the wife of the late Frank N. Avella and Kalman Patonay and is survived by her son Frank J. Avella and his wife Frances L.C. of Atkinson, NH, grandson Michael Avella and a great grandson Anthony Avella both of Salem, NH.

At the family’s request there will be a private Funeral Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Three Rivers, MA with burial to follow in the Bethany Cemetery, Monson, MA.

Pasquale “Pat” Cagnetta

Mr. Pasquale “Pat” Cagnetta, 78, of Haverhill, died Wednesday at Penacook Place Nursing Home, Haverhill.

He was born in Haverhill, February 26, 1929, son of the late Frank and Angelina (Baldassarri) Cagnetta.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Cagnetta graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1948.

During the Korean War he served in the Army stationed in Germany.

After the war he worked alongside his father as a painting contractor and also employed as a Union bricklayer.

He as a member of the former St. Rita’s Church and a member of Sacred Hearts Church, the Sons Of Italy, Victor Emanuel Lodge in Haverhill, AMVETS. He enjoyed playing 45’s and dancing. He was also a volunteer at the former Hale Hospital for over 20 years.

His survivors include a son, Mark J.A. Cagnetta and his wife Kathy of Manchester, NH, two daughters, Patrice F. McColley and her husband John of Haverhill, Michele B. Cagnetta of Sherman Oaks, CA, three sisters, Mary Curcio of Haverhill, Jennie DePalma of Braintree, Lena Cataldo of E. Weymouth, 3 grandchildren, Meredith and Michael Cagnetta, and Gianna McColley, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cagnetta was also the father of the late Darlene A. Cagnetta who died in 1972, and brother of the late Frances “Kiki” Hebert.

Betty Ann “Beth” (Woodsum) Valley

Mrs. Betty Ann “Beth” (Woodsum) Valley, 40, of Methuen, died Wednesday morning at the Holy Family Hospital, Methuen.

She was born in Haverhill, January 25, 1967, daughter of Betty Ann (Kidder) Woodsum of Lawrence, and the late Lawrence Woodsum.

Attended Haverhill Grammar Schools, Betty attended Lawrence High School.

She was employed as an Accounts Payable Clerk for Aramark, Lawrence, and prior to this as a waitress at Carlene’s Coffee Shop, Lawrence.

Betty enjoyed fishing, computers and video games.

Besides her mother her survivors include her husband of 16 years, Thomas E. Valley of Methuen, a brother, Lawrence Woodsum, Jr. of Fitchburg, a sister, Samantha and her husband Christopher O’Keefe of Northampton, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Arthur D. Baril, Jr.

Mr. Arthur D. Baril, Jr., 75, of Haverhill, died Monday morning at the Merrimack Valley hospital, Haverhill.

He was born in Amesbury, December 31, 1931, son of the late Arthur D. and Julia (Barry) Baril, Sr. Mr. Baril was educated in the Amesbury school system.

He was employed in the local shoe shops. For over 6 years he owned and operated the former Sparkle Brite, Plaistow, NH.

Mr. Baril had a great love of horses and owned them most of his life.

He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.

His survivors include his wife of three years, Linda J. (Stone) Baril of Haverhill, a son, Philip Baril of Haverhill, a brother Roger and his wife Tammy Baril of Manchester, NH, a sister, Shirley and her husband Bill Gilman of Manchester, NH, 9 step-children as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service Monday morning at 11:00 at the Salvation Army, 395 Main St., Haverhill.

Patricia J. “Dakota” (Mullins) Poirier

Mrs. Patricia J. “Dakota” (Mullins) Poirier, 65, of Haverhill passed away unexpectedly Monday evening at her residence.

She was born in New Orleans on July 3, 1942, daughter of the late Melvis E. and Carolyn P. (Massa) Mullins.

She came to Haverhill at an early age and attended the Haverhill schools. She was employed at various companies in several industries.

She was the wife of the late Robert Poirier and is survived by her daughter Wendy Ann Menard and her husband Scott G. Thornbury of Salem, NH, sister Barbara and her husband Richard Demers of Newton, NH, grandchildren Erin N. Duchemin of Laconia, NH and David W. Viens, Jr. of Salem, NH, nephew Michael Demers of Newton, NH, and close friend Roger Oberle of Haverhill.

At her request, there will be no services. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill.

Corinne I. (Bergeron) Hughes

Mrs. Corinne I. (Bergeron) Hughes, 79, of Haverhill, and formerly of Newburyport and Salisbury, died Wednesday evening at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington.

She was born in Haverhill, May 11, 1928, daughter of the late Leo C. and Cora (Lougee) Bergeron. Mrs. Hughes was educated in the Haverhill school system.

She and her late husband were Foster Parents for over 50 children for the Home For Little Wanderers and Department of Social Services since 1986. They received the “Foster Parents of the Year Award”.

She was considered by both organizations to be an expert with babies and was called upon for emergency placement on numerous occasions.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of Star of The Sea Church, Salisbury.

She was the wife of the late Paul F. Hughes who died in 2004, and mother of the late Lydia and Paul Hughes, Jr., and her survivors include four sons, David L and his wife Karen M. Currier of Haverhill, Norman and his wife Peggy Currier of Plaistow, NH, Robert Gardner of Crofton, MD, Matthew David Hughes of Haverhill, two daughters, Michelle A Hughes and Mary Margaret Hughes both of Haverhill, 2 brothers, Robert and his wife Dorothy Bergeron of Davidson, MI, Donal C. and his wife Mary Bergeron of Seabrook, NH, a sister, Ida L. and her husband Eugene Mahair of Salisbury, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Monday morning at 9:30 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a Funeral mass at 11:00 in Star Of The Sea Church, Salisbury.

Kenneth Earl Strangman

Mr. Kenneth Earl Strangman, 81, of Quincy and formerly of Haverhill died Wednesday at the Radius Specialty Hospital in Quincy.

He was born in Haverhill on July 22, 1926, son of the late Leonard W. and Emma (Rideout) Strangman.

He was employed at Curry College in Milton, MA for many years.

He was the brother of the late William, Calvin, Leonard, and Alfred Strangman, Ruth Barr, Mary MacDonald, Elaine Scamparino, Edna Harvey, and Barbara Berube.

He is survived by his sister Marion Beaupre of Haverhill, brothers Robert Strangman and his wife Mary of Haverhill, and Richard Strangman and his wife Charlene of Bradford, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Kenny was loved by his many friends at Delta Projects including his housemates of over 10 years, Walter Nordblom, Jim Purcell, Kay Whitten, and by Barbara, Steve and all of the staff at Pilgrim Rd.

Michael Zoukee
October 1, 2007

 

Mr. Michael Zoukee, 78, of George’s Mills, NH, and formerly of Haverhill, died Monday evening at Sunapee Cove, George’s Mills, NH.

He was born in Haverhill, September 23, 1929, son of the late George and Evangeline (Chrysohos) Zoukee.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Zoukee graduated from Haverhill high, class of 1947. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1951.

For over 30 years he was employed as an Electrical Engineer for Princeton University, from where he retired in 1992.

Prior to this he was employed in the same capacity at RCA, Princeton, NJ.

Mr. Zoukee enjoyed traveling, classical music and fine dining.

His survivors include a son, George Zoukee of Newbury, NH, 2 sisters, Rita Mehos of Darien, CT, Charlotte Canellakis of Southborough, his former wife, Sophye Zoukee of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, 6 nephews and a niece.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service Friday morning at 11:00 in the Greek Orthodox Church of The Holy Apostles, Winter St., Haverhill.

Richard Theoharis
October 1, 2007

Mr. Richard Theoharis, 85, of Haverhill, died Monday afternoon at his residence.

He was born in Haverhill, June 25, 1922, son of the late George and Edna (Dunn) Theoharis, and was educated in the Haverhill school system.

During World War II he served in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of S1c. Until his retirement in 1988 Mr. Theoharis was employed for the Mass. State Highway Department for over 17 years.

He was a member of the VFW, Salem, NH, and the DAV, Newburyport.

He was the husband of the late Jessie (Bradley) Theoharis who died in 1991 and his survivors include three sons; Jonathan R. Theoharis of Lowell, George F. Theoharis of Wichita, KS., Jeffrey Theoharis of Lawrence, two daughters; Victoria J. Straw and her husband Charles of Newton Junction, NH, Constance D.Theoharis of Haverhill, a brother, George Woodsum of Newburyport, a sister, Eleanor Girrier of Cape cod, a sister in-law, Victoria Bradley of Haverhill and a Dear family friend, Linda Gallant of Amesbury. 

Richard was extremely proud of his Greek Heritage and recent discovery of his Mic Mac Indian Ancestry. Back in the day, he enjoyed playing "45 [a local card game] with friends where the 5's are the highest card in the deck. Five is where he stood in life. 5 children, 5 grandchildren [Joshua, Adam, Samantha, Rachel and little George] and 5 great grandchildren!!!

Daniel MacLeod, Jr.
September 29, 2007

Mr. Daniel MacLeod, Jr., 65, of Haverhill, died Saturday afternoon at the Hannah Duston Nursing Center, Haverhill.

He was born in Brookline, August 14, 1942, son of the late Daniel M. and Esther J. (MacLellan) MacLeod, and was educated there.

During the Korean War He served in the United States Army.

For over 21 years he was employed as a supervisor for Mirra Construction, from where he retired in 2003.

In 1965 he was the 15th Worlds Strongest Man.

He is survived by two sons, Shane Milette of Haverhill, David Gilchrest of Lowell, two brothers, Wesley MacLeod of Rochester, NH, Joel MacLeod of Sanbornville, NH, a granddaughter, Jennifer Gilchrest, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

 

 

Ret. Lt. Commander Frank John Woidyla
September 27, 2007

Ret. Lt. Commander Frank J. Woidyla, 84, of Haverhill, died Thursday afternoon at the Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence.

He was born in Haverhill, January 16, 1923, son of the late John and Frances (Pirog) Woidyla. Educated in the Haverhill school system, he graduated from Haverhill Trade School, class of 1942. He was employed for a short time at the Boston Navy Ship Yard and Bethlehem Steel Co., Quincy.

For over 28 years he was in the United States Navy, where he earned the rank of Lt. Commander. While in the Navy he participated in the Bilstein Athol Atomic Bomb Tests in 1946, and received a Navy Occupation Service Medal, American Theater Medal, and 2 Good Conduct Medals. He Commanded 6 different surface vessels, served aboard the Atlantic and Pacific Destroyer Force Fleets. Mr. Woidyla also received a Commendation Ribbon from the Secretary of the Navy for, “heroism in saving a man from drowning in waters off Wallis Sands Beach, Rye, NH, June 20, 1953”.

Mr. Woidyla is a “plank owner” at the U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington, D.C., Life member of the VFW Post #29, DAV Post #20, AMVETS Post #147, American Legion Post #4 where he was Commander in 1976, Life Member of The Retired Officers Association (TROA), Polish National Home where he was President fro 1971-1972, and a former president and General Commissioner of the Polski Club, Haverhill.

He was also an avid golfer, and enjoyed bowling and deep sea fishing.

He was the husband of the late Mary I. (Cook) Woidyla who died in 2000, and father of the late Kenneth Goodson, and his survivors include 2 sisters, Helen Woidyla of Windham, NH and Victoria Flynn of Methuen, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Woidyla was also the brother of the late Sophie, Marja, Anthony, Albert, Michael, Steven, Joseph, Peter, and Rudolph.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Wednesday at 9:00 from the H.L. John Olan Horne
September 26, 2007

John Olan Horne, 87 of Newburyport, and formerly Haverhill and Lowell died Wednesday 9/26/07 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital of complications following a stroke. His son Jonathan provided care, companionship and was present with John’s daughter Mary at his passing.

He was born in Ward Hill, March 14, 1920 son of the late Postmaster Olan Radburn and Kathleen A. (Sullivan) Horne.

A graduate of Keith Academy in Lowell, John went on to a rich scholastic career at Harvard University in Cambridge earning an A.B in English and French Class of l942

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed tobogganing, biking, Hockey and was an accomplished Figure Skater. 

Post Graduation John served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer and earned numerous battle ribbons in the European Campaign including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in l945

After the war John Pursued his immense love of the written word honing his skills in numerous fields. A master of English and French language and literature, John was a School Teacher in Lowell and Newburyport schools, a private tutor up through the spring of 2007, a proofreader for the Boston Globe to 1983, a freelance editor and an accomplished author. Via his exquisite vocabulary and eye for detail and razor sharp wit, John created remarkable stories from war and everyday human experience published by the Boston Globe and other literary magazines.

A strident taskmaster particularly regarding grammar and vocabulary, this fastidious soul provided us with immeasurable opportunity to improve ourselves and enhance our knowledge of language, etiquette and art. He maintained an impressive library of fine literature, music art, classic comedy and film.

Ever the natty dresser, John’s slight but jaunty figure will surely be missed on the local horizons he so enjoyed. An advertising slogan displayed in his home summarizes his philosophy on appearance and dress: Unpolished shoes are the open fly of footwear”

John was predeceased by his eldest daughter Margaret Mary Horne in 2004. He is survived by eight other children, four grandchildren one newborn granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

His family will be receiving relatives and friends this Sunday 9/30/07 from 1-4 at Heritage House 32 Low St. Newburyport, 2nd floor community room. Parking can be found at the adjacent lot of the ice rink please.

Robert Massie

Mr. Robert Massie, 68, of Georgetown and formerly of Haverhill, died Sunday evening at the Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

He was born in Haverhill, November 10, 1938, son of the late Alexander and Bertha (Mack) Massie. Mr. Massie was educated in the Haverhill school system, graduating from Haverhill High class of 1956.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958.

For over 15 years he was employed as a Leather Cutter for Shutzer Manufacturing, Lawrence. Prior to this he was employed at Clicker City, Haverhill.

An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. Mr. Massie loved the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots.

His survivors include his sons, Robert and his wife Kim Massie of Lawrence, Michael Massie of Derry, NH, James and his wife Maria Massie of Salem, NH, Scott Massie of Derry, NH, and Thomas Guyette of Pittsfield, NH, 10 grandchildren, Marissa, Taylor, Eric, Jonathan, James, Jessica, Justin and Matthew Massie, Jessica Sanz and Megan St. Pierre, a great granddaughter, Cadence Massie, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Massie was also the grandfather of the late Andrew Massie.

Clifton Earle Robinson
September 23, 2007

 

Mr. Clifton Earle Robinson, 90, a longtime resident of Haverhill died Sunday evening at his daughter’s home in Melbourne, FL.

He was born in Haverhill on April 19, 1917, son of the late George W. Robinson, Sr. and Effie M. (Holley) Robinson.

He attended the Haverhill schools and graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1936. Mr. Robinson was a Navy veteran of WWII, and was employed as a Postal Carrier in Haverhill for 28 years, and was also a machinist for 17 years at Davis & Furber in N. Andover.

Mr. Robinson was a former member and trustee at the former People’s United Methodist Church in Bradford, member of the AMVETS in Haverhill, and was a former Eagle Scout.

He was the husband of the late Marjorie L. (Haskell) Robinson and is survived by his daughter Carole A. and her husband Wallace Furber of Melbourne, FL, two grandsons Jeffrey and David and his wife Heather Furber, three great grandchildren Jacob, Kieran and Joshua, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Diane Robinson, brother of the late George W. Robinson, Jr. and Estelle Mattinson.

Stanislaw Soborski
September 22, 2007

 

Mr. Stanislaw Soborski of Newton, MA and formerly of Haverhill and Methuen, died peacefully on Sept. 22 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law where he had lived the past five years. He was 82.

Born in Poland, Mr. Soborski pursued a life-long interest in Polish history, especially World War II history, and accumulated an impressive collection of books on the subject. He was an avid reader and closely followed current events in Poland and the Polish-American community. He wrote frequent letters to the Editor of the Polish daily “Nowy Dziennik” newspaper. He maintained close ties with his native Poland.

After retiring from Continental Can Co./Haverhill Boxboard Corp., Mr. Soborski made extended trips to Poland to visit family and friends. He most recently traveled to Poland in 2005 to celebrate his 80th birthday. He was a generous supporter of Polish charitable and cultural organizations. Mr. Soborski was a devoted family man and took great pride in his two grown children who, to his great pleasure, are living the American dream. He also adored his grandchildren.

He leaves behind his loving daughter, Atty. Barbara Brustowicz, devoted son-in-law Dr. Robert Brustowicz and beloved grandchildren Alexander, Katherine, Caroline and Allison all of Newton. He is also survived by his former wife Michalina (Kurys) of Methuen, his loving son, Andrew, daughter-in-law Cecylia and cherished granddaughter, Natalia of Dalton. He also leaves behind several dear relatives and friends in Poland.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9:00 from the Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in All Saints Church, Haverhill. In accordance with Mr. Soborski’s wishes his cremated remains will be buried at his parents’ family grave site in Poland.

Olga J. Veckys

Ms. Olga J. Veckys, 89, of Haverhill, died Friday at the Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, Haverhill.

She was born in Lawrence, daughter of the late August and Anna (Stasys) Veckys.
Educated in the Lawrence school system, Ms. Veckys graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1935. She attended Salem State College where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education. Ms. Veckys later received her Masters Degree in Guidance from Boston University. She also attended Tufts and Harvard.
She served the Haverhill Public School System from 1943 until her retirement in 1987, where she taught for several years, was Dean of Girls and became Chairperson of the Guidance Department at Haverhill High as well. Ms. Veckys moved to Haverhill in 1967

She was a former member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, Merrimack Valley Guidance Association, appointed to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and its Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee, Supervisor of the College Board of Advanced Placement Program, and the Administrative Council at Haverhill High School.

Ms. Veckys was also a member of the Whittier Club, Women’s City Club, Haverhill
Historical Society, Merrimack Valley Herb Society, Lawrence Immigrant Archives, and the Lithuanian Women’s Citizens Club of Lawrence.

She loved the opera and symphony, travel, cooking, gardening and her beloved kitties. She was proud of her Lithuanian heritage and actively promoted its language, history and culture throughout her life.
Her survivors include several cousins in Lithuania.

Virginia R. (Minichiello) Wierzbicki

Mrs. Virginia R. (Minichiello) Wierzbicki, 94, of Haverhill, died Thursday evening at the Hannah Duston Nursing Home.

She was born in Haverhill, February 8, 1913, daughter of the late Giacomino and Rosina (Fasulo) Minichiello.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mrs. Wierzbicki was a member of All Saints Church.

Prior to her marriage in 1953 she was employed in the local shoe industry and resided with her late sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Vincent DiBurro and their children, Ernest DiBurro, Richard DiBurro, Rose Marie (DiBurro) Connelly, and Henry DiBurro, for over 20 years.

After her marriage she moved to Bedford. While there she was employed as a waitress at Bellino’s, and also for her late husband’s shoe repair shop.

Mrs. Wierzbicki was the wife of the late Walter F. Wierzbicki who died in 1987, and her survivors include a sister, Julie Minichiello of Haverhill as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning at 11:00 in All Saints Church, Haverhill.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill.

Anna Galvin Nyhan 

1917-2007

 

The family of Anna Nyhan announce the passing of their dear and beloved mother at the Elizabeth Seton Nursing Home on September 20. She had turned ninety years old on September 9.


Anna was born in Haverhill, the youngest daughter of Bartholomew and Ellen (Wrenn) Galvin, Sister Toman Galvin, CSJ and Margaret Gillespie, and on brother Thomas Galvin. She was a graduate of St. James High School, class of 1935. Anna was married to the late Walter J. Nyhan and the mother of Bartholomew, James, John and Marianne Ravenna. 

She was a life long resident of Haverhill and for twenty-five years an employee of the Haverhill Housing Authority. She retired in 1983. Anna was a forty year parishioner of Sacred Hearts parish, Bradford and a member of both the Catholic Daughters of America and the parish women’s bowling league.

In addition to her four children and devoted friends she leaves eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, the youngest of whom, her twin grandsons, were born this past September 4. Anna will be waked on Sunday from the Farmer Funeral Home, 210 South Main St. Bradford from 5-8 PM and the funeral Mass will take place on Monday September 24 at 10:30AM. Burial will be private and will take place in the family plot at St. James Cemetery in Haverhill. In Lieu of flowers contributions in Anna’s name can be made to the Friends of Elizabeth Seton, 125 Oakland St. Wellesley, MA. Anna was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to her funeral Monday morning at 9:30 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home 210 So. Main St. Bradford, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 in Sacred Hearts Church.

Burial in St. James Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Estelle S. (Kniznik) Klayman
September 20, 2007

 

Mrs. Estelle S. (Kniznik) Klayman, 94, of Andover and formerly of Haverhill, died Thursday evening at Wingate at Andover.

She was born in Providence, RI, May 16, 1913, daughter of the late David and Bella (Shatkin) Kniznik.
Educated in the Providence, Rhode Island school system, Mrs. Klayman attended the Rhode Island School of Education.

She and her late husband co-founded the former Haverhill Answering Service in 1959, which was located on Washington St., Marsh Ave, and Cedar St. After her retirement in 1977 her sons continued the business.
A life member of Temple Emanu-El, Mrs. Klayman was a member of the Hadassah and a former member of its Sisterhood.

She was the wife of the late Max David Klayman who died in 1990 and her survivors include two sons, Kenneth and his wife Harriet H. Klayman of Rutland, David S. and his wife Jane M. Klayman of Andover, a daughter, Toby J. Klayman and her husband Joseph Mack Branchcombe of San Francisco, CA, two sisters, Sylvia K. Fain of Providence, RI, Louise A. Macy of Fall River, 4 grandchildren, Elizabeth J. Klayman, Susan Harris, Jesse M. Klayman, Micah D. Klayman, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill.
Burial will be in Children of Israel Cemetery, Haverhill.

A Memorial Observance will be held at her son David’s home in Andover immediately following the interment.

Earl R. McNamara, 37 of Haverhill, died Sept 15 at his home

He was born in Newburyport, June 1, 1970, and was educated in the Newburyport Public Schools.

Earl was employed as a cook in area Restaurants.

His survivors include his mother Evelyn Bergeron of Salem, NH, a brother Scott A. and his wife Kellianne McNamara of Plaistow, NH, and a niece Chelsey McNamara.

John D. Owens
September 14, 2007

 

Mr. John D. Owens, 41, of Worcester and formerly of Haverhill, died Friday evening at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester

He was born in Haverhill, Jan 12, 1966, son of the late James J. Owens the III who died in l995, and Kathleen M. (Kelleher) Owens of Bradford section of Haverhill.

John was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools System and was a l984 Graduate of Haverhill High School, where he lettered in football and baseball. He later attended Assumption College and Worcester State.

He was employed as an electrical apprentice and more recently as a technician with J. N. Phillips of Marlborough. 

John adored his 4 nieces and nephew and had many wonderful times with them. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

Besides his mother Kathleen M. (Kelleher) Owens of the Bradford section of Haverhill, his survivors include two brothers, James J. Owens, IV and his wife Kirsten C. Blackwill of Westwood, Michael P. Owens of Haverhill, sister, Kelly A. and her husband Lawrence A. Bryer of the Bradford section of Haverhill, his grandfather, Eugene Goodreault of Walnut Creek, CA, John also leaves his companion Michelle Kirouac of Worcester, 4 nieces and a nephew, Declan J. A. Bryer and Kasey K. Bryer both of Bradford section of Haverhill, Kayla M. Owens and Madison E. Owens both of Haverhill, and Eleanor B. “Ellie” Owens of Westwood, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins

Gladys Melendez
September 14, 2007

 

Gladys Melendez, 76 of Haverhill, died Friday evening at the Baker Katz Nursing Home.

She was born in Puerto Rico, Jan 14, 1931 daughter of the late Roberto Melendez and Emilia Arroyo and received her education in Puerto Rico.

In l954 she relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she was employed as a seamstress.

Gladys has been a resident of Haverhill since the l997.

She was married to the late Alexander Alvarez, and her survivors include a son Raymond Irizarry of Teaneck, NJ, 3 daughters Minerva Alvarez of Holyoke, MA, Wendy Alvarez of Plainfield, NJ, Shirley and her husband Stanley Fung of No. Andover, MA, sister Angelita Rivera of Puerto Rico, brother Osbaldo Melendez of Puerto Rico, step brother Monico Melendez of New Britain, CT, step sister Teresa Melendez of New Britain, CT, 3 grandchildren Alex Fung, Kevin Fung and Isabella Mylene Alvarez Gomez.

Irio Goldoni
September 12, 2007

Mr. Irio Goldoni, 85, of Bradford passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Edith Nourse Memorial VA Hospital in Bedford, MA.

He was born in Bologna, Italy on May 28, 1922, son of the late Luigi and Pasqua (Benati) Goldoni.

He later came to this country at the age of 10, was educated in the Haverhill School system and proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon.

He was employed as a sheet metal worker at the Todd Bath Shipyard in Portland ME, a cook at Lamazzo's Restaurant in Haverhill, a hand sewer at various shoe factories throughout Massachusetts, a furniture salesman at Gerson's Furniture Haverhill, and finally joined his wife and daughter at Mary Pauline's Beauty Shop in Haverhill until his retirement.

He was an avid reader; he enjoyed sketching, cooking, bowling and golf. He was a devoted family man and especially enjoyed family gatherings and Sunday dinners.

His survivors include his wife of 60 years Lena (Solimino) Goldoni of Bradford, daughter Linda Cassell and son in law James J. Cassell of Haverhill, three grandchildren Laureen Laffey and husband Joseph, James L. “Jimmy” Cassell and Michael I. Cassell all of Haverhill, two great grandchildren Joey and Linda Laffey, his brother George C. Goldoni and wife Ellie of Bradford, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral on Monday Sept. 17th, at 10:00 from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 So. Main St. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 at St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Haverhill.

Detective Lieutenant George E. Credit
September 10, 2007

Detective Lieutenant George E. Credit, 58, a lifelong resident of Haverhill passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning at his home.

He was born in Haverhill on Sept. 14, 1948 and attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School, St. James High School and graduated from Bryant MacIntosh Business College. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War receiving the National Defense Service Medal and later continuing his service in the Navy Reserves.

In 1973, George enlisted in the State Police Academy and was a Mass State Trooper for next 35 years, serving with C Troop, SP Newbury Station Commander, Division of Standards and Training, Troop A, and currently was a Detective Lieutenant in Internal Affairs.

He was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, and the Commissioned Officer Assoc. George loved his grandchildren more than words can describe, never missing a single sporting event. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing in the Haverhill Softball League of which he was on several championship teams. George loved his family and had an outstanding career with the Mass State Police.
